Okunoin

The holy precinct of Okunoin is the center of the tradition of faith in Kobo Daishi. Beginning with the tomb where Daishi remains today in eternal repose, Okunoin also includes the Torodo (Hall of Lamps; see photo on page 13), the Memorial Hall of Lamps, Hall of Offerings (see page 60), Fudo Hall, Mimyo-no-hashi (the bridge passing over a stream on approach to Daishi's Shrine), an ossuary, scripture storehouse, and the water-covered statues of Jizo. The clear waters of the famous Tamagawa stream are said to purify the hearts of the faithful as thev cross the bridge. Alongside the stream are numerous "Tarnagawa memorial stones."
